0. Prologue
My name is Makoto Sakura. I’m sixteen years old.
In the spring of my first year of high school, I got into a small dispute that led to my expulsion. Since then, I’d been living as a recluse, holed up in my room.
My stepmother and I hadn’t gotten along to begin with, and being at home all day only made things worse. Eventually, it escalated into a massive argument involving my father as well.
That day, I stormed out of the house and decided to sleep at a park.
It was only two days later when the dungeons suddenly appeared all over the world.
---
The emergence of dungeons changed everything.
First, humanity was introduced to a level system. This phenomenon completely upended conventional norms and values.
A person’s worth was no longer determined by their education, income, personality, or looks—it was now all about their level.
Why? The answer was simple.
The higher your level, the stronger you were.
Within these dungeons, people could obtain all sorts of items, none of which could be explained by modern science. Nations around the globe scrambled to secure these invaluable resources, recruiting as many dungeon explorers as possible within their borders.
Dungeon explorers were given extraordinary benefits, including exemptions from income tax. Conversely, those who chose not to enter dungeons were treated with extreme neglect.
The items retrieved from dungeons were purchased by governments at exorbitant prices, prompting countless people to quit their jobs and become explorers.
Higher-ranked dungeons yielded rarer items. However, they were also teeming with dangerous monsters. Only high-level explorers could take on these threats, making them indispensable assets to their countries.
As I mentioned, humanity’s value system was rapidly shifting to revolve solely around levels.
Now, eight months after the appearance of the dungeons, explorers are both feared and revered under a single title:
Players.
