Part 3
"Alright, since you’re going to change again soon, this should be fine."
Melinda said, pulling out a simple white dress from her clothes and handing it to Sicily.
"Now hurry up and change, and then we’ll head back to everyone. You’ve already wasted enough time as it is. Let’s go quickly."
"I-I’m so sorry..."
Sicily, aware that she had wasted time because of her, looked apologetic as she changed into the dress.
"Still, you were honest about it, huh. You could get national treasure-level armor, and if it were me back in my younger days, I’d definitely have kept quiet."
"...I wasn’t really eager to take advantage of Shin-kun’s kindness. But there was no other way... So when Shin-kun helped me, I was really happy... but I felt so guilty... and it was hard to keep quiet about it..."
"Even with those feelings, you found it painful to accept help?"
"...Yes."
"I see... You're a good girl. I really did feel bad earlier."
"No, it's about your family, so it's only natural. I'm the one who should apologize."
"By the way, Sicily?"
"Yes, what is it?"
"What do you think about Shin?"
"Eh, wha...!? Me, what do I think!?"
"I'd like to ask someone as good as you to take care of Shin."
"Take care of him!?"
"What’s the verdict? It seems like you’re not entirely against the idea."
"Well, it’s... I’m not sure how to feel..."
"Hmm?"
"I don’t dislike him, definitely. But when asked if I like him... I only know that he’s kind, strong, and cool... so I don’t really know."
"...That’s good enough, I think..."
"Eh?"
"Ah, never mind. Anyway, you're done changing, right? Let’s go back to everyone."
"Yes!"
As Sicily and Melinda headed back to the others, Melinda had made up her mind.
(This girl... I definitely need to keep an eye on her.)
Sicily was now firmly on Melindas radar.
◇
Sicily and Grandma came back. It seemed like Sicily had calmed down quite a bit. Good to see.
"Sicily, feeling better?"
"Yeah... I'm sorry, Shin-kun... I got you involved in my situation and caused all this trouble..."
"I told you, it’s fine. This was my decision. Anyway, hand over that uniform."
Sicily held the removed uniform in her hands. Now, it was time to apply the enchantment to the uniform. I took the uniform from Sicily.
"Shin."
"What is it, Grandma?"
"As for the enchantment on that uniform, do it in front of everyone."
"Why?"
"So they can see just how unreasonable this is."
"Unreasonable? Is it really?"
"Yes, watch their reactions and realize just how bizarre what you're doing really is."
I got scolded harshly... Is this really that unreasonable?
Anyway, I decided to start right away.
First, I needed to remove the enchantment already on the uniform.
I prepared the special tool for removing the enchantments. This wand is thin and short, designed for precise work.
I then wrapped the uniform in magic and visualized the enchanted letters rising up. The letters appeared.
"W-what is this?"
"Magic defense? Shock absorption? Stain resistance?"
"Could it be... the enchanted words on the uniform...?"
"I’ve never seen such a thing before."
Everyone was already in an uproar from the very beginning.
Next, I activated the tool and applied the tip of the wand to the floating enchanted words.
Then...
"The letters... they’re disappearing..."
"No way... are you removing the enchantments!?"
That’s right, I was erasing the letters and removing the effects.
At this point, everyone was staring in disbelief. But the real show hadn’t even started yet.
"Ah... no matter how many times I see it, this is still an absurd sight."
"Hoho, you're doing things that no one would ever think of so casually. You've grown."
"You're the one! You're the reason Shin is... Shin is...!"
Grandpa and Grandma were playfully bickering.
Seriously, just get back together already.
I had finished removing all the enchantments on the jacket, shirt, and skirt. Now, the real magic enchantments were about to begin.
First, I focused on envisioning "Absolute Magic Defense." The idea was to dissipate any harmful magical energy touching the uniform. I then applied the enchantment to the uniform, one after the other. I did this for all three pieces—jacket, shirt, and skirt—since re-envisioning the process every time would be too much work.
"Did you just apply the same enchantment to three separate things?"
"Just one would be difficult enough."
"That's incredible..."
Wait, what? They're amazed at that too!?
Next, I envisioned "Complete Physical Shock Absorption," and focused on imagining the elimination of kinetic energy acting on the fabric. I maintained that image as I applied the enchantment to all three pieces of clothing.
Then I continued to apply "Stain Resistance" and "Auto-Healing" to the uniform as well.
By that time, everyone had fallen silent.
"Seems like they're too stunned to say anything..."
Is that so?
And with that, the enchanted uniform was complete.
"By the way, Shin, I noticed you used some unfamiliar characters. What effects do they have?"
I chose to explain the enchantments and ignored the mention of the characters.
"The enchantments I applied are four in total: 'Absolute Magic Defense,' 'Complete Physical Shock Absorption,' 'Auto-Healing,' and 'Stain Resistance.'"
"…I heard some rather unsettling terms there."
"Really? Just think of them as upgraded versions of the original enchantments already on the uniform. I added 'Auto-Healing' as a new one."
"…And? What does each effect do?"
I proceeded to explain each effect to Uncle Dis.
"Completely nullifies magic..."
“Hmm, this enchantment could potentially affect the very purpose of magic users…”
“So, physical attacks won’t work either?”
“It even repairs injuries…”
“At this point, it’s practically invincible…”
Everyone is muttering about something, but I still don’t think this is perfect.
“Even so, this is still a magical tool, so it won’t activate unless it’s infused with a certain amount of magic. It can’t stop a surprise attack. Also, it doesn’t cover areas outside the uniform—hands, feet, and the head are still unprotected.”
I’ve been thinking about how to fix this. Magical tools need to be infused with magic to activate, so they can’t be used continuously. That’s why lights need lamps or candles, and fireplaces need firewood.
What I’m considering is storing magic like a battery and using that energy source to activate the tool. I’ve come up with the idea, but there’s nothing to store the magic in. I wonder if there’s something useful out there...
“I see, now I understand what Melinda-sama meant. If this were to be presented to the nation, there’s no doubt it would become a national treasure. And the ease with which you applied the enchantments is impressive... to say the least.”
“Indeed, this is an extraordinary item. However, Your Majesty, this…”
“Ah, I know. Shin, listen carefully.”
"What? Uncle Dis?"
"Shin, this enchantment is incredible. No, it's beyond incredible. But if this were to spread to the world, it would be disastrous. Listen, you must never speak of this to anyone."
"I'm not planning to go around telling people, but is it really that serious?"
"It is that serious. If the military finds out about this enchantment…"
"If they find out…?"
"There’s a high chance that voices within the military will start calling for war against neighboring countries."
"War!? A declaration of war!?"
"Think about it. Armor that makes soldiers immune to both magic and physical attacks, and even heals their injuries instantly. Don’t you think an army equipped with such gear could completely overwhelm other nations?"
"T-That’s…"
"Humans are weak to temptation. If they realize they could start a war with overwhelming superiority, there will be those who give in to that temptation."
"N-No way…!"
I… I just wanted to protect everyone… That’s all I ever intended… But now, it might be turned into a tool for war… That never even crossed my mind…
…It’s like I just got hit with the reality of how different my way of thinking is from this world’s…
"I see… Yeah… I never even considered that possibility."
"Oh… Shin… Shin is finally reflecting on something!"
Grandma looks weirdly emotional. Hey, that’s rude—I have reflected on things before! I always try to make sure I don’t repeat my mistakes…
"Well, as long as you understand, that’s what matters. This should…"
"I was actually thinking of applying the same enchantment to Aug’s uniform too… but I guess spreading it any further would be a bad idea, huh?"
"Wait, Shin? Hold on—"
"Sorry, Aug. I can’t put this enchantment on your uniform after all."
"Hold on a second, Shin! Yes, I agree that we shouldn’t let this information spread. But there’s no denying how useful this ability is. Don’t you think it just comes down to making sure we use it correctly?"
"Of course. I never created it as a tool for war in the first place."
"See? See? There’s no better way to protect yourself than this. And, of course, I believe the royal family needs to be properly protected. Yes."
"Uncle…"
"Father…"
Uncle Dis looks so desperate…
I originally planned to apply the enchantment to Aug’s uniform anyway, so it’s not a big deal…
"I didn’t want to see Father in such a state…"
Aug looks super awkward. He’s probably only ever seen his father with that dignified appearance in the royal castle.
"Aug, you’d better get used to it now. You’ll see this kind of thing often around here."
"…I see… So that’s how it is…"
In the end, the same enchantment was applied to Aug’s uniform. When I suggested applying it to everyone else, Maria flat-out refused.
"I don’t want to wear some uniform that’s basically a state secret…"
She said it with complete disdain.
By the way, the two guards insisted it was absolutely necessary, so I applied the enchantment to them as well.
In the end, I had to make three more uniforms. When I tried to give the uniforms that had already been made to Sicily, she said I couldn’t hand them over until Aug got his first, so I gave them to Aug first. What a pain…
"Shin, thank you. It’s a little scary, but… I can tell you’re serious about protecting us. I’m really happy."
Sicily thanked me with a smile.
…She really is cute… I want to protect her somehow… but I can’t be by her side all the time…
"Shin, is this the end of it?"
"Well, like I said before, this isn’t perfect. Considering the worst-case scenario, I’m thinking of what else I can do…"
"Hoh hoh, if that’s the case, I’ve got a good idea!"
"Eh!? What? Grandpa!"
"Before that, let me ask you something, young lady. How far is your house from here? And how will you be getting to school?"
"My house is about a ten-minute walk from here. I was planning to walk to school with Maria."
"This royal capital is very safe, so normally, walking to school wouldn’t be a problem… but the most dangerous time for young ladies is during the commute to and from school. That’s when there’s a high chance of them being targeted."
"That’s…"
"So, I think it would be best if Shin picked you up from your house every morning and walked to school with you."
"Merlin! You… you’re saying something good!"
"Hoh hoh, I know, I know."
Grandpa looks so proud. I guess he’s trying to make up for what Grandma stole from him earlier.
…What, though…?
"But… wouldn’t that be a huge burden on Shin-kun? Having him come all the way to my house and then go to school with me… I can’t ask him to do that."
Sicily worries about the burden on me even though she’s the one being targeted by Kurt. She’s really such a kind girl.
"Heh, you don’t have to worry about that. Shin can use a certain magic to come pick you up."
"Melinda… I was just about to say that…"
Grandpa looks a bit down now.
"Then just say it already."
"I’ll say it now… don’t worry about it, young lady. Shin has a convenient magic that he can use. That’s what we’re planning to have him use."
"Convenient magic?"
"Ah, that…"
Uncle Dis looks a little distant. There’s no need for him to make that face.
"Shin, can you show her the magic?"
"Sure, but what should we use as a destination?"
"Hmm… the house in the forest should be fine."
"Got it."
I imagined the house we used to live in, and then…
“Gate”
I said the name of the magic to make it easier to understand.
Then, a glowing gate appeared right in front of us.
Ignoring the bewildered expressions of everyone, I approached the gate, instructed them to step through, and entered first.
On the other side of the gate was the familiar house. It had been several months since I last came home.
One by one, everyone came through the gate, and as soon as they did, their eyes went wide in surprise.
"This magic is still incredible."
"It’s been a while since I’ve been here. It looks like the barrier is still functioning properly."
"Of course. Do you know who cast it?"
The adults, having seen it before, seemed calm, but the classmates were speechless.
"This is the house I lived in until not long ago."
When I said that, Aug immediately started up and spoke up.
"Wait a minute, didn’t you say you lived deep in the forest?"
"That’s right. This is deep in the forest."
"Why are we here?"
"I used a gate."
"A gate?"
"Yeah, it’s a magic that directly connects where you are now with where you want to go."
"Could it be… teleportation magic?"
"Well, it’s a little different from teleportation, though."
I didn’t bother explaining that part, since they probably wouldn’t understand.
I remember explaining it to Grandpa before, and he couldn’t grasp it, even though he could use spatial storage magic.
"Te-teleportation magic…"
"That’s something that only appears in stories, right…?"
"I didn’t think you were that much of an ignoramus, but this…"
"You really don’t know magic, do you…?"
It’s not like I can help it; it worked because I imagined it!
As I looked at the house, something suddenly caught my attention.
Huh? Why is the magic tool that maintains the barrier still active?
"Hey, Grandma."
"What is it?"
"Why is the barrier’s magic tool still running?"
"Th-That’s, uh… that! That’s just Grandma’s superior technology at work!"
"Superior technology, huh…"
"More importantly—look! You’ve shown them the magic already, so let’s head back!"
"Alright, alright…"
I opened another gate, and we returned to the house in the royal capital.
◇
(Th-That was close…)
Melinda, when questioned by Shin, quickly tried to change the subject.
It was hard to say that she had successfully diverted the conversation…
In truth, the method Shin was considering—storing magical energy and using it for continuous operation of a magic tool—had already been put into practical use. There are items capable of storing magical energy.
So why hadn’t Melinda taught Shin about this?
The reason is that the items capable of storing magical energy are extremely expensive and rare. In fact, Melinda only owned one such item herself, and she couldn’t afford to let Shin use it. The biggest reason, however, was…
(What would happen if I told Shin about magic stones?)
Melinda feared that more than anything. And above all…
(If it’s Shin, he might even create magic stones himself…)
Magic stones are crystallized magical energy that has accumulated over many years in this world.
The exact principle behind how they crystallize hasn’t been figured out. Since they’re mostly discovered underground, there’s ongoing research into whether certain types of soil or minerals might cause this crystallization, but no definitive conclusions have been reached.
(Sigh… But he’ll probably learn about them in class eventually, so it’s only a matter of time before he finds out…)
Melindas worries were endless.
◇
Somehow, Grandma had forced the conversation to shift. Whether she wasn’t going to say anything or just couldn’t, if Grandma wasn’t going to tell him, then there was nothing to be done. Shin didn’t know how it worked, but it seemed there was a way to continuously use magic tools, and Grandma would probably teach him eventually. More importantly, there was the matter of the commute.
"You understand, right? Shin will use this 'Gate' to go pick up the young lady from her house and return here. Then, she can walk to school from here. Afterward, she’ll come back here, and Shin will use the 'Gate' again to send her home. There shouldn’t be any problem with that, right?"
"Merlin, what a great suggestion. Sicily, from now on, you’ll go to the academy via our house every day!"
"With this, Shin won’t have to bear the burden, right?"
"That’s right. So you don’t need to worry about Shin’s burden."
"Yes. Shin?"
"What is it?"
"Um… Would it be alright if I ask you to do this?"
"Of course!"
"Well then, let's head to the young lady's house right away."
"Huh? Why are we going to her house?"
"Ah, this magic can only take me to places I’ve been before."
"That’s right. So we need to go to the young lady’s house now."
"I see, so that’s how it works."
"Yes, indeed. Now, let’s go quickly."
Grandpa and Grandma were eager to go.
"Why are Grandpa and Grandma coming too?"
"We’ve been entrusted with protecting the young lady, so what kind of guardians would we be if we didn’t go?"
"It’s only natural for the guardians to make their greetings."
Apparently, that’s considered normal. Is it really?
"Alright, let’s get ready and head out."
"Uncle Dis, just wait a moment."
"Huh? What is it?"
"Is it really okay for the king to just casually decide to visit a vassal’s house like that?"
"That’s right, Father. I’ll be patient, so please be patient as well."
"Sigh, so I was found out. I thought I could slip away in the confusion."
In the end, the group heading to Sicily’s house was the same as the one coming back from school: me, Grandpa, Grandma, Sicily, and Maria.
A ten-minute walk turned into less than five minutes by carriage. Sicily’s house, a viscount’s residence, was even bigger than ours. As we arrived, the gatekeeper approached.
"Excuse me, may I ask who you are?"
Hm? Oh, right. On the way here, Sicily must have come with her parents in the family’s carriage, so they wouldn’t recognize her.
"It’s me, Mike. I’ve just returned."
"Miss!? You’re returning in a different carriage—has something happened!?"
It seems there’s been quite a stir recently with Kurt involved, and everyone’s on edge.
"I’m fine. I was just being escorted."
"I see… and who might these people be?"
"These are the Sage Merlin-sama, the master Melinda-sama, and their grandson, Shin."
"W-Wait! The Sage One!? The master!?"
They were extremely surprised. Well, of course. If a hero suddenly appeared, that’s what would happen.
"Hoh ho, may I come in?"
"Y-Yes! Please, come in!"
"Thank you."
"A-Actually!"
"Hm?"
"Could I… could I shake your hand!?"
"Hoh ho, of course."
"Thank you so much!!"
"Make sure to protect Sicily’s house properly."
"Yes!!!"
Ah, they’re on the verge of tears again.
We then entered the house. I needed to confirm where to open the gate.
Inside, Sicily’s parents, who had returned earlier after the entrance ceremony, greeted us.
"Oh! You’re back, Sicily! Now, please tell us about what the Sage and Master had to say…"
"Father, Mother, I’ve just returned. And, um, these are…"
"W-Wait! The Sage!? The Master!?"
"Nice to meet you, I’m Merlin."
"I’m Melinda."
"H-Hello! I’m Cecil von Claude! I-I’m so honored to meet you…!"
He started crying! Sicily’s father!
"Oh my, you! I’m so sorry, I’m Sicily’s mother, Irene von Claude. Now, why have the Sage Merlin-sama and Master Melinda-sama come to our home?"
Sicily’s mother asked with a curious expression. She really does look just like Sicily. She has darker blue hair than Sicily, and if you aged Sicily up a bit, this is how she would look.
By the way, Sicily’s father is a handsome man with blond hair and blue eyes. He has that refined "noble" vibe about him, even though he’s currently crying his eyes out…
"Hoh ho, before that, Shin."
"Nice to meet you. I’m Shin, the grandson of Merlin and Melinda."
"My… grandson…"
Wait? Now Grandma looks like she’s about to cry.
"Oh, you’re the one who helped Sicily, Shin? Thank you so much."
"Oh, yes! Thank you, Shin! You’re Sicily’s… no, you’re the benefactor of our entire family!"
"I-I don’t deserve such praise. It’s only natural that I helped."
"I have something I’d like to discuss about that."
"A discussion?"
Grandpa then explained that I would be picking Sicily up every morning and seeing her home in the evening.
"Well, but… isn’t it asking too much of Shin? That’s quite a burden, don’t you think?"
"There’s no problem with that."
Then, I opened the gate again, and this time, we went to the royal palace.
"Hm? You’re already back?"
Uncle Dis was there.
"Your Majesty!?"
Ah, Cecil-san was completely shocked. No surprise there. That’s why you should have come back earlier and got to work.
"Ah, you were explaining the gate magic?"
Uncle Dis ignored him and went back to Sicily’s house.
They were shocked by the gate magic, but seeing their own king on the other side of the gate? Yeah, that’s definitely surprising.
"Well, as I was saying, Shin will be using this magic for the commuting. There’s no burden, and most importantly, it’s safe."
"To think you would go this far… truly, thank you so much!"
"Ah, no need to be so formal. More importantly, both of you, lend me your ears for a moment."
"Huh? Ah, yes…"
Grandma whispered something to Sicily’s parents. After exchanging glances, the three of them shook hands. What was that about? What did they agree on? And Grandpa was left out of it.
"…"
Hang in there, Grandpa!
Then, we selected the location for the gate’s connection. We didn’t want to surprise the family by suddenly appearing, so we decided to use an empty room. From inside the room, I knocked in reverse to let them know we had arrived.
This was also communicated to the servants, who swore they wouldn’t speak of it.
"Well then, I think that’s everything settled. It’s about time we head back. Sicily, I’ll be picking you up starting tomorrow. Wait for me with Maria."
"Yeah. Thank you so much for today. I’ll be counting on you from now on."
"Ah, no, I’m the one who’s taking advantage here."
"What are you talking about? We live next door, so it’d be weird if I didn’t send Maria too."
"Ah, well, I didn’t want to be a third wheel, you know…"
"Don’t be weird about it!"
That was going to get awkward!
"Well, see you tomorrow."
"Yeah, see you tomorrow."
"Bye!"
With that, I headed back home.
After Shin and the others left for Sicily’s house, August muttered to himself.
"If they’re going to bring a guard, it would have been simpler, but they deliberately ignored that."
He had seen through Merlin and Melindas plan.
◇
The next morning, I went to pick up Sicily right away.
When I opened the gate to the empty room prepared in Sicily’s house, Sicily and Maria were already waiting on the other side.
"Good morning. You’ve been waiting already?"
"Good morning, Shin. I couldn’t make you wait when you’re here to pick me up."
"Good morning! I couldn’t settle down, so I ended up waking up early."
It seems like everything’s ready, so let’s head out right away.
But first, I need to greet Sicily’s parents.
They’re in the dining room, so I leave the room and head over to greet them.
"Good morning, Cecil-san, Irene-san."
"Oh, good morning, Shin."
"Ah, good morning, Shin."
They both greeted me warmly. Cecil-san, dressed in a suit unlike yesterday’s formal attire, looks like he’s about to go to work. He has a scarf around his collar, and with the suit, he looks incredibly stylish.
"Hm? What’s the matter, Shin?"
Ah, I was staring too much. I might’ve been a little rude.
"Oh, I’m sorry. I just thought you looked really stylish and handsome. Are you heading to work?"
"Hahaha, thank you. Yes, I’m heading to work. And this outfit, my wife picked it out for me. I couldn’t pull off something like this myself. I’m not really one to pay much attention to clothes."
"Hehe, thank you for the compliment, Shin. If you like, would you like me to help pick out an outfit for you too?"
"N-No, that’s fine."
"Oh, don’t be so shy."
Irene-san laughed as she spoke to me.
"Shin! Let’s go soon! Father too! You need to head to work!"
Sicily urged me to hurry up.
"Oh? Sicily, what’s this about?"
"W-What is it, Mother?"
"It’s nothing, really."
"Geez!"
I’ve never seen Sicily like this before. Is this the side of her she shows to her family? She looks so lively.
"Shin! Let’s go already!"
"Y-Yeah."
Sicily grabbed my arm and led me out of the dining room.
"Oh my, ho ho."
"Sicily has grown up, hasn’t she…"
I heard those voices behind me as we made our way to the designated room.
I could’ve opened the gate right there, but I decided to be considerate of the surroundings.
It would’ve been rude to use magic where people are eating.
Just as I was about to open the gate, Maria called out to me.
"Hey, how long are you going to keep holding onto his arm?"
I suddenly remembered that Sicily was still holding onto my arm.
"Ah! S-Sorry!"
"Huh? No, it’s fine."
Actually, it was kind of lucky.
"Oh? Did I do something unnecessary?"
Maria was grinning.
"M-Maria!"
"Hehehe, you’re so cute!"
The two beautiful girls were playfully teasing each other. It’s a nice sight. This is a nice sight!
"Alright, we’re going now."
"“Okay!”"
And then we arrived at home through the gate.
"Oh, Sicily, Maria, good morning!"
"Good morning to you both."
"Good morning. Merlin-sama, Melinda-sama."
"Good morning."
There was another round of greetings here. I’m having a hard time getting to school.
"Well then, Grandpa, Grandma, I’m off."
"Ah, do your best."
"Remember, be careful and take care of yourself!"
I really don’t want to slack off, especially when I’m about to attend classes, but I guess I’ll have to…
"I know, Grandma."
When they see me off like this, they really do look like true grandparents.
I really wonder why they don’t get back together.
And then I walked to the academy, which was a fifteen-minute walk. Along the way, I didn’t find any malice through detection magic. That way, if there’s a sudden surge in magic power, I’d know right away.
In the end, I arrived at the academy without incident.
It felt like a bit of a letdown, but it seemed the two of them were nervous, and once we arrived at the academy, they let out a sigh of relief.
But since the person in question is also at the same academy, I couldn’t relax just yet. However, being inside the academy is a bit better. There are teachers and other students around.
Having already been warned twice by Aug, I didn’t think anyone would be bothering us here.
When we arrived at the classroom, most of the students had already arrived.
"Good morning, Shin. Starting your school life with a girl by your side, you really are something."
"Good morning, Aug. And shut up! You know the reason why."
"I know, I know. I just couldn’t resist teasing you."
"You…"
"Good morning, Shin-dono."
"Good morning, Shin-dono."
The two guards were with us too. Julius is still acting like a samurai.
"Ah, good morning."
After greeting everyone, Alice came running in.
"Ah! Did I make it in time!? It's okay, right!?"
"You’re just in time, but... how is it that you’re barely making it on the first day of class?"
"Well, I was so excited for today’s classes that I couldn’t fall asleep last night, and ended up oversleeping."
"Are you a child or something!?"
Fifteen is considered adulthood in this world, though.
"Good morning, everyone. Let’s start homeroom. Everyone, take your seats."
As we were having this exchange, Professor Alfred arrived. It seems like it really was down to the wire.
"Looks like everyone’s here. Well then, good morning again, everyone."
"Good morning!"
"Now, I’ll go over today’s schedule. As I mentioned yesterday, we’ll tour the academy in the morning. After lunch, we’ll have our first magic practical. I’ll guide you to the first practice field afterward, so gather there. You don’t need to bring anything with you… though it looks like all of you can already use spatial storage. As expected of Class S. Now, that’s all for today’s announcements. Any questions?"
None of the students had bags on their desks, which means they all could use spatial storage.
I did see some students with bags on the way to school, so it seems not all magic users can use it.
It seems that being able to use spatial storage is one of the criteria for entering Class S.
The High Magic Academy has two buildings.
One is the classroom building. There are four classes per grade, and the first years are on the third floor, second years are on the second floor, and third years are on the first floor.
The other building houses the staff room, student council room, laboratories, and research rooms for the various clubs.
These research groups are, well, kind of like clubs.
There’s the "Offensive Magic Research Group" focused on studying offensive magic,
the "Life Improvement Research Group" that aims to create various magical tools using enchantment magic,
and the "Body Enhancement Research Group" that specializes in physical enhancement magic.
...What’s with the last one!? They’re totally going about magic the wrong way!
And upon hearing this, Julius’s eyes lit up. Of course!
"If it weren’t for my duties as the prince’s bodyguard, I’d definitely want to join that research group…"
"What? Don’t worry about me, just go ahead and join."
"No, I couldn’t possibly do that."
"This is the High Magic Academy. Royal authority doesn’t hold any weight here. I have no power to keep you tied to me."
"But…"
"It’s just within the academy. You should do as you please."
"Your Highness… I am deeply grateful…"
Aug was being considerate of Julius. Honestly, I had to admit, this was pretty impressive of him.
But then I glanced at Aug and saw him smirking.
Wait a minute! Is this guy trying to push his bodyguard away because he finds it annoying!? Julius, you’re being tricked!
"Aug… you…"
"Hmm? What’s wrong, Shin? Did you find a research group you want to join?"
"No, it’s not that, but…"
"I see. Well, I figured none of them would be satisfying enough for you. Why not just start your own research group?"
"W-What?"
He said it so quickly I barely had time to react. It was obvious he was trying to change the subject.
"Oh? A research group led by Wolford? Now that sounds interesting."
Just as I was about to press Aug on his scheme, Professor Alfred chimed in, backing up the idea.
"Yes, exactly. I’d be very interested to see what kind of research group Shin would create and what kind of activities he’d do."
"Indeed. Quite intriguing."
Even Rin, who usually didn’t speak much, joined the conversation.
"I’m interested too! If you make one, I want to join!"
"I’d love to join too~"
"I’d join as well. If I’m in your group, I’ll probably be able to stay in S-Class forever."
"Professor, how does one go about creating a research group?"
"You can start a research group by having at least five members and an advisor, then submitting the application form."
"That means we’ll also need to come up with a name for the research group."
Everyone started talking at once. Wait, when did it turn into me starting a research group?
"U-Um, wait a minute, everyone…"
"If Shin’s starting a research group, I guess I have to join too, right?"
"Huh? Ah, yeah, I guess so?"
Sicily suddenly brought that up.
"Then, how about this! 'Hero Research Group'?"
"What’s that?"
"I want Shin to teach me about Merlin-sama and Melinda-sama!"
"That already exists. It’s a research group where we study and discuss stories, plays, and the materials that inspired them, and how we can reach the heights of Merlin-sama and Melinda-sama."
"It exists!?"
Seriously!?
"Ah, that’s disappointing."
"We can decide what kind of research group we’ll have after this afternoon’s class."
"That’s true. Let’s decide then."
"Then I’ll bring the application form at that time, and anyone who wants to join can come forward."
It’s decided! They decided everything without asking me!!
"Hey… can you not decide everything on your own?"
"What’s wrong? Did you find a research group you want to join after all?"
"Are you joining the Hero Research Group?"
"No… I already know all about that..."
"Wolford, I think it’s a good idea. You’re already well-known, so all the research groups will probably start recruiting you. Choosing one from them will be tough, you know?"
"Well, yeah, that’s true…"
"Plus, if you need an advisor, I’ll be one. All the members in this class will probably join, so there shouldn’t be any issues."
"That's right, Shin! Let’s do it!"
"Sigh... Fine, I get it."
Somehow, I ended up agreeing to start a research group. How did this happen?
"Hehe, looking forward to it, aren’t you, Shin?"
Yeah! This guy is the one who steered the conversation in that direction!
"Aug... you..."
"Come on, let’s hurry up and finish checking the rest, then it's time for lunch."
"Okay!"
In the end, I couldn’t chase Aug down for an explanation. He kept grinning the whole time. Aug...
We went around the campus and headed to the practice field. The academy has three practice fields, and the one we used for the entrance exam was the second one. The others used the first or third fields.
Out of the three, the one with the strongest magical barrier is the first practice field, apparently.
It seems that Class S and upper-grade students mainly use it.
Finally, we went to the cafeteria. By the time we had finished touring, it was exactly lunch break, so we ended up having lunch in the cafeteria, and we temporarily dispersed.
As I mentioned before, the cafeteria is free, but the menu was impressive.
It was a cafeteria-style setup where you pick dishes and place them on a tray. There were meat dishes, fish dishes, soup, salads, and several types of bread. New students tend to overeat, and it’s become a tradition to see them suffering from overeating in the cafeteria during the start of the semester.
Alice and Julius had joined that tradition.
And then, the afternoon magic class began.
Everyone had a look on their face that seemed both nervous and excited.
When Professor Alfred arrived, everyone lined up and waited for the class to start.
"Alright, everyone’s here? Then let’s begin the first class at the High Magic Academy."
"Looking forward to it!"
"That said, the first lesson is already decided. You’ll be using the magic you demonstrated during the entrance exam again."
I could feel the tension melting away from everyone’s body.
"Alright, let’s get started. Yesterday, we did introductions in the order of entrance exam scores, so today let’s do it in reverse. Rittenheim, you’re first."
"Understood."
So, it’s Julius first… I’ve been curious about what he’s going to do.
"Then, here I go!"
With that, he began to coat his body with magical energy. And then…
"ORYAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!"
He used body enhancement magic and literally flew from his starting position.
"DOOOOORAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!"
And with a punch coated in magic power, he struck the target and smashed it.
...Can we really call this magic used by a mage?
Still, the impact was incredible. To go this far just to pass the exam…
Looking around, everyone was in shock.
Tor placed her hand on his forehead and let out a sigh, while Aug was holding his stomach, laughing.
Julius’s overwhelming impact made it difficult for others to follow, but everyone continued after him.
As expected of Class S. Everyone destroyed their targets.
Sicily, who had said she was better at healing magic, and Yuri, who preferred enchantment magic, did the same.
"Now, finally, Wolford."
"Yes."
Since it’s the same as the exam, I guess that means...
I created my usual pale blue flames.
"Unchanting!?"
"I’ve never seen pale blue flames before..."
"So beautiful..."
And then I shot a fireball.
BOOOOM!!!
The fireball that destroyed the target hit the magical barrier wall and shook the practice field. I guess this is the same as during the exam?
"Am-mazing..."
"This is... the grandson of a hero..."
"Unbelievable, I didn’t think it would be this powerful..."
Everyone was stunned. Since I was last, I probably put a little too much energy into it.
"Alright, that’s everyone. Seeing everyone’s magic wasn’t just to check your current abilities, but also to let everyone see various kinds of magic. As you know, magic won’t activate unless you have a clear image in your mind. The chant is there to help with that, but seeing it with your own eyes is the best way to form a clear image. And I think you all now understand what your strengths are. You can also ask for advice on the magic you want to learn. Normally, it’s us teachers who give that advice, but since we’ve become classmates, I think it’s a good idea to challenge and learn from each other."
I see. Since we’re classmates now, that kind of relationship is the best, right?
"That’s all for the first magic practical. It may feel short, but it’s the first day. We’ll have more classes from now on, so be prepared."
"Yes!"
"Well then, the class is over for today. Now, as I mentioned this morning, here’s the application form for the research group. It’s fine if Wolford is the president, but who wants to join as members?"
"Yes!"
"I see. The entire first-year S-Class, huh? Well, that’s what I expected. Now, we just need to decide on the name of the research group."
The process moved forward quickly without me having a chance to give my opinion.
"Huh? Even Julius?"
"Yes. With Shin-dono’s research group, it seems like we could master body enhancement magic."
"...Tch."
Don’t click your tongue, Aug!
"I’ve got a good idea!"
Rin raised her hand.
"Oh? What’s the name?"
"How about 'Ultimate Magic Research Group'?"
Ultimate Magic Research Group!?
That’s painful! It’s so cringeworthy, Rin!
But surprisingly, the reaction from everyone was positive.
"I see, 'Ultimate.' That could actually be perfect for Shin."
"Yeah. With Wolford-kun, he could probably use attack magic that destroys everything, a defense that can’t be broken, and maybe even teleportation magic eventually."
When it comes to magic, Rin can’t stop talking.
Sorry, but it’s not teleportation magic—just the Gate.
"I like it! 'Ultimate Magic Research Group'! Sounds super impressive!"
"It does sound impressive, but... just being a part of that research group would probably feel like a lot of pressure..."
Maria seems surprisingly weak to pressure? But this name...
"It seems like it’s decided. Then, just fill out the application form and we’re done."
In the end, the research group was established without anyone asking for my opinion.
Ultimate Magic? No way...
◇
While Shin and the others were struggling to come up with a name for their research group at the academy, a regular meeting was being held at the royal castle with the heads of various departments.
At the regular meeting held every month, each department head was giving their monthly report, but among them, the head of the Military Affairs Bureau, Dominic Gastol, had a serious expression on his face.
"Now, we move on to the Military Affairs Bureau... What’s wrong, Dominic? Is there a problem?"
"Yes, Your Majesty, actually… while reviewing this month’s operational status, I happened to discover something by chance…"
Dominic Gastol, the successor to Michel Calling as the Grand Commander of the Knights and the head of the Military Affairs Bureau.
The Military Affairs Bureau consists of the Knights and the Mage Corps, with the Soldiers' Division under the Knights.
The position of the Bureau Head alternates between the Grand Commander of the Knights and the Commander of the Mage Corps, and this season it was the Grand Commander’s turn to be the Bureau Head.
Now, this strong and capable Grand Commander had a troubled look on his face. The civil servants around him tensed up.
"Actually, it has come to light that the number of Demon appearances has increased significantly over the past year."
"What!?"
A ripple of shock ran through the department heads at this unexpected report.
"What do you mean? I’ve never heard of such an increase in Demons."
"Indeed, if the number of Demons had really increased, it would’ve caused a stir throughout the country. There’s been no mention of such things, not even as rumors…"
They all spoke up, puzzled. Demons were a threat to this world, and it was a problem that the entire country needed to address. The fact that their numbers were increasing was disastrous news. However, there had been no rumors circulating. So what did this mean regarding the Military Affairs Bureau Head's report?
"I understand your disbelief. We didn’t notice it either. I won’t argue if you call us fools. But it is the truth."
"Dominic, what exactly is going on?"
"The person responsible for preparing the materials for this month’s report mistakenly sent last year’s data. We noticed the mistake immediately, but when I looked at the report that was submitted afterward, I noticed that the number of Demon appearances was clearly higher compared to the same month last year."
"What!?"
"W-What!? You didn’t notice this for a whole year!?"
"But there are daily reports in the Military Affairs Bureau! How did you not notice this!?"
"That daily report is the reason for the oversight."
"What? What do you mean?"
"We too were suspicious as to why we hadn’t noticed, so we went back and reviewed all the past daily reports. As a result… we found that little by little, the number of Demons had been increasing."
"Little by little?"
"Each day there would be a slight increase, then the next day the numbers would be the same. The day after that, they’d increase a little again… It was so gradual, it could easily be mistaken for just an error margin, but it was definitely increasing."
That’s why Dominic said they hadn’t noticed.
"However, the burden on the Demon hunters must have increased as well. Didn’t they notice?"
"When I questioned the responsible parties, they said they hadn’t noticed. Since the increase was gradual, they probably just got used to it."
The tension in the room relaxed a bit after that report.
"So, you’re saying that they were able to handle it? In that case, it’s not really a problem, is it?"
"It’s not as simple as that. Yes, they’re managing now, but the number of Demons is definitely increasing. And... I personally feel it might be artificially induced."
"Ridiculous! Are you saying Demons can be artificially increased?"
"I’m just giving my personal opinion. However, after seeing this data, I believe everyone here will share my thoughts."
With that, he had his assistant distribute the data. As the other department heads looked over it, they all frowned.
"Your Majesty, this is an abnormal situation. Immediate investigation is necessary. May we have permission to conduct a large-scale investigation?"
"Indeed, this is a grave situation. Understood. Use the Knights, the Soldiers’ Division, the Mage Corps, and even the Demon Hunter Association for a thorough investigation."
"Understood!"
"And this matter is to remain confidential. Do not speak of it to anyone until we have accurate information."
"Understood!"
At this point, only the department heads were aware of the situation, but a deep sense of unease began to spread among them.

That night, at the mansion of a certain noble…
"Kurt! Is Kurt here!?"
Russell von Ritzburg, the master of the mansion, was shouting loudly.
"What is it, Father?"
"It’s not ‘what is it!’ I was called by the king today. Do you understand why?"
Hearing this, Kurt clicked his tongue.
"What are you thinking!? You know that bringing up status in the Three Great Academies is strictly forbidden!"
"With all due respect, Father, that law is wrong! We are chosen people! It's absurd to treat us the same as commoners!"
"Kurt… What are you saying?"
Russell looked at his son as if seeing a completely different being. He couldn’t understand what his son was saying. This wasn’t the son he knew; he wasn’t supposed to say such crazy things.
But Kurt, now worked up, couldn’t stop.
"I am one of the chosen! I am special! And yet, everyone mocks me and goes against me! This should not be allowed!!!"
"Kurt..."
Russell was sure of it now.
His son had gone mad.
Even as he ranted, Kurt continued muttering to himself.
"Yeah, it’s him. Ever since he showed up, things have been strange. I can’t control women, and now even the prince... If the prince sides with him, then maybe... I should..."
"Kurt!!!"
Thwack!!
Russell, using all his strength, slapped Kurt. His hand, not accustomed to violence, turned red from the force.
"I cannot overlook those words! I will consider punishment for you! Someone! Take Kurt to his room and lock him up!!"
The servants who had been watching the exchange between Russell and Kurt stood there, stunned, as the guards escorted Kurt to his room.
Russell, holding his swollen hand, muttered quietly to himself.
"Kurt… What has happened to you…?"
